Is Hair Transplantation Necessary?

Stress: This is also referred to as telogen effluvium. Stress causes changes in the hair follicles that move from anagen growth phase – catagen – telogen rest phase. Growth of lost hair is likely to occur in about 6 months. In this case one will not need a hair transplant to replace the lost hair.

Androgenetic Alopecia: This is the most common form of hair loss also referred to as male pattern baldness. It results from excessive production of androgen hormones. Examples of these androgen hormones are dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and testosterone. This is usually a natural occurrence and makes up 95% of the causes of loss of hair in men. One with this type of hair loss would greatly benefit from frontal hair transplant.

Diseases:

  • Acidosis
  • Arsenic and thallium poisoning caused by heavy metals
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can lead to hair loss. The problems can be reversed with treatment.
  • Lupus – makes hair weak resulting to it falling out. Scars on scalp can lead to hair loss too. In lupus the loss of hair is not permanent.
  • HIV
  • Severe chronic illness
  • Pituitary gland diseases
  • Syphilis in the late stages

For some of these diseases hair transplant can be performed but it is not a recommendation. The hair replanted may also not grow due to the disease.

Chemical damage: The chemicals kill the hair follicles. The condition starts in patches before spreading. Chemotherapy is the most common cause of this type of hair loss. Some of the drugs can cause hair loss. For example those used to treat cancer, cholesterol, birth control and even high blood pressure.

Before having a transplant done ensure you consult the expert to see if you qualify to have this procedure done. Most of these procedures are very expensive and you need to keep in mind the costs.

Hair loss is a natural occurrence and transplantation is just one of the ways to control it but not prevent it. If you can avoid the stress and take better care of yourself especially if your lifestyle is the cause, then you will have a better future.
